Local livestock show scheduled for Sunday

Kay County's Future Farmers of America and 4-H students will flock to the county fairgrounds in Blackwell starting Sunday, February 17 for a week of livestock shows and events.

The local show for Blackwell FFA and 4-H students will be held at the fairgrounds on Sunday.

The Kay County junior livestock show will be held from Monday, February 18 – Friday, February 22, ending with an awards banquet Friday.

The county show begins Monday at 8 a.m. Weigh-in and classification for goats will run from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. Lamb weigh-in and classification will run from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. 

 
The goat show will be held at 11 a.m., with does followed by wethers. The lamb show will take place 30 minutes afterwards, with ewes followed by wethers. One hour after the conclusion of the lamb show, sheep and goats must be removed, and hogs may enter the facilities at that time. All barns will close at 10 p.m.

On Tuesday, hog weigh-in and classification will run from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. The hog show is scheduled for 11 a.m. Purebred gilts will be followed by commercial gilts; then, a 15-minute break will be taken before barrows are shown. Hogs are to be removed within an hour of the show's conclusion. No cattle are to be brought into the show barn until Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, the cattle weigh-in and classification will be from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. The cattle show will begin at 12 noon, with heifers followed by steers. The preliminary premium lineup will be posted 30 minutes after the cattle show. At 5:30 p.m., registration for the Kay County American Farmers and Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union Junior Livestock Show speech contest is to be held. The contest itself will be held at 6 p.m. in the fairgrounds event center for participating 4-H and FFA exhibitors.

Thursday is a clean-up day. 

On Friday, no live animals will be brought back for the awards assembly, which begins at 5 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the doors will open for the premium lineup dinner at the event center. At 6:30 p.m., a presentation of awards will be held with a dance following.
