Halloween in Blackwell: Where to go and when!

by Charles Gerian

This weekend is Halloween, which means Blackwell will be home to hundreds of little ghouls, goblins, princesses and superheroes.

They’ll be out trick-or-treating Saturday from 6 – 8:30 p.m.

Chief of Police Dewayne Wood advises motorists to be cautious because of the increased foot-traffic throughout the city, especially in residential areas, during trick-or-treating.

“We want to strongly caution drivers that may be out and about that night, either with their own trick-or- treaters or if they’re just going to the store or the gas station,” Wood said. “We want to caution drivers that kids are going to be out with masks, costumes that might restrict movement or sight, and that sometimes, they might not see cars coming, so please be careful.”

Along with traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, the Blackwell Church of Christ on south Main Street and the Immanuel Baptist Church on south 13th

Street will host “Trunk-or-Treat” community events from 6 – 8 p.m.

Those events will allow children to collect candy in a localized area with adult supervision. This week, the Blackwell Public Library is offering Halloween-centric craft workshops at 4 p.m. every day for elementary school-aged and middle school-aged children. Children will be given goodie bags with treats. The library will not host a Halloween event this year.

The Blackwell Youth Center will not conduct an event during Halloween weekend, but it will host “Gobble ‘til You Wobble” dances Nov. 12 and 13. Guests are encouraged to “wear your costumes, wear your turkey outfits, dress formal or come as you are,” Youth Center Director Denise Hindman said.

The Nov. 12 dance, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., will be for elementary school-aged children. The Nov. 13 dance, from 7 – 9:30 p.m., will be for students in the fifth grade and up.

Admission to each dance costs $5 per person, with proceeds going to the youth center.
