Marquita Spengler

Marquita June Spengler, 94, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday evening, March 19, 2023, at Winfield Senior Living.

Born June 13, 1928, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Herbert and Cora (Sawyer) Overman. She was raised on a farm near Blackwell and received her education in Blackwell, graduating from Blackwell High School in 1946. She then attended college in Oklahoma City for one year.
Marquita was united in marriage to Gerald Gilbert “Gib” Spengler on May 22, 1948, at the Prairie Chapel Church in Oklahoma. The couple made their first home on the family farm in rural Winfield. When their children were young, they moved to the home where they would spend their life on the same family farm. In addition to being a dedicated homemaker and farm wife, Marquita began working as a school secretary and teacher’s aide with USD 465 in 1975. She remained with the school district until retiring in 1994. Gib preceded her in death on March 12, 2009.

She was baptized and attended Prairie Chapel Church while in Oklahoma and was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield for over 70 years. Marquita was very devoted to the church, serving as an Elder and Deacon, attending bible studies and teaching Sunday School. She was also a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship, Tisdale Extension Unit, and was very active in 4-H. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed flowers, cooking, baking cookies, and keeping the great grandchildren fed.
Her family includes her son Blaine Spengler and wife, Nancy of Winfield; her daughters, Marilyn Miller of Winfield; Elaine Spengler Boyer and husband, Curtis of Newkirk, OK; her grandchildren, Kristin Priest, Sarah Owens, Cody Boyer, Paige Boyer, Heath Spengler, Payton Spengler, and Whitley Albright; and her great grandchildren, Caleb, Abby, Andru, Ethan, Olivia, Corban, Jillian, Georgia, Addisyn, Jake, Annie, Ayda, Parker, Joel, Victoria, Isabella, Emma, Viola, Fitz, Lily, and Elizabeth.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marquita was preceded in death by a grandson Geremy Spengler, a granddaughter Molly Miller, her brother Ellis Overman, and a son-in-law Doug Miller.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning, March 24, 2023, at 10:00 A.M., at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6:30 that evening.
A memorial has been established in Marquita’s name for the Cowley County 4-H Development Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
