Howard Lee Wayman

April 09, 2024

Howard Lee Wayman, known as “Steve” to his friends and family, was born August 18, 1966, to Dennis Wayman and Patsy (Harris) Wayman. Steve passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 4, 2024, in Blackwell, OK, at the age of 57 from a massive heart attack.

Steve married his wife Kris on March 10, 2000 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. Together they built a life and home in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Steve and Kris raised a beautiful family. They loved going to ballgames and school activities with their children. Kris and Steve enjoyed traveling to see family and were apart of anything their grandkids did. Steve lived for his family and work.

Steve started out as a volunteer fireman in Nash. After discovering that his grandpa Harris started the Nash Fire Department, Steve took pride in that legacy and it sparked an interest in firefighting. Carolee McCart encouraged him to take firefighting classes where he grew a love for caring for others and many friends guided him into pursuing firefighting as a career. He was a compassionate leader and teacher for his fire house and everyone around him. It brought him so much joy to help others. He served selflessly for many years at the Blackwell Fire Department. He retired from the Blackwell Fire Department as the Deputy Chief of the Red Shift in 2011 with 22 years of fire service. Just as his father, Steve had a love for driving a semi-truck. This led him to working for Diemer Construction and Trucking for seventeen years.

Steve was a pillar of the community, an honorable man, and a compassionate leader. He had a generous spirit as he was always thinking of others before himself. He was known for his mischievous antics and smirk. He had a contagious laugh and was always the first one to crack a joke or play a prank on someone. Steve didn’t know a stranger. He was known and loved by so many. Steve had a funny nickname for everyone he knew. It brought him great joy to make those around him happy.

As Steve would say, “Be Safe out there, brother!” until we see you again.
