Blackwell Veteran, Educator, and Storyteller Celebrates 90 Remarkable Years

August 05, 2025

Paul Michael, a U.S. Army veteran, lifelong educator, and local storyteller, turned 90 years old on Saturday, July 19.
Michael, who has called Blackwell home for nearly 25 years, is known not just for his service and dedication to others, but for the joy he brings through storytelling—a hobby those close to him joke he considers a "sport" for seniors. According to his granddaughter Nicole Gile, “He could spend all day recounting tales from the past,” often with a chuckle and a twinkle in his eye.
Born and raised on a family homestead, Michael grew up hearing firsthand accounts of the Oklahoma Land Run and working the farm with a team of mules. A proud graduate of Oklahoma State University, he went on to serve in the United States Army, later dedicating much of his life to education, including time spent teaching at the historic Chilocco Indian School in Kay County.
Throughout his career, Michael also served as a district manager for Moorman Feed Company, traveling across Oklahoma calling on farmers and ranchers—never missing an opportunity to strike up a conversation and make a new friend.
But perhaps his greatest role has been that of a family man. Married for 72 years to his high school sweetheart—who also happens to be his childhood best friend—Michael’s life is filled with love, laughter, and treasured memories. He is a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, with a strong faith and a heart for serving others.
Those who know him speak of his kind spirit, friendly nature, and endless well of stories—especially his favorite about legendary Oklahoman “Pistol Pete” Frank Eaton. Whether he’s talking horses, FFA, his love of God, or the adventures of a life well lived, Paul Michael has a way of connecting with people of all generations.
Now, as he celebrates his 90th birthday, his family is inviting the community to join in honoring this extraordinary man.
“Paul Michael is genuine, compassionate, and truly one of a kind,” Gile said. “He’s lived an extraordinary life, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to celebrate him.”
The Blackwell Journal-Tribune is proud to recognize Paul Michael and congratulate him on this incredible milestone.
