Boonies to host double benefit for Braman Fire Department, Kay Electric's Spencer

Boonies Recreation will bring together live music, food and community support Saturday, Sept. 12, with a double benefit supporting the Braman Volunteer Fire Department and Kay Electric Cooperative's Kris Spencer ahead of his upcoming service trip to Guatemala.

The event will be held at Boonies Recreation, located northwest of Braman at 12757 N. 108th Street.

Gates will open at 4 p.m., with the Tulsa-area Honkytonk Highway Band scheduled to take the stage after 7 p.m.

The Braman Fire Department will serve a hamburger, hot dog and french fry dinner during the benefit, with additional snack items available. A portion of gate and merchandise proceeds will be distributed to the two beneficiaries.

Organizers are encouraging members of neighboring fire departments, Kay Electric employees, friends of Spencer and residents throughout Braman and surrounding communities to attend and show their support.

The benefit will provide an opportunity to support the Braman Volunteer Fire Department and raise awareness of the role its members play in protecting the rural community.

Like many volunteer departments, Braman relies on community support to help maintain, repair and replace equipment used by firefighters responding to fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies and other calls.

"These are the frontline people to help when fires, accidents and medical emergencies arise," organizers said. "Boonies would like to promote awareness of the invaluable work these people do."

The evening will also serve as a community send-off for Spencer, who will represent Oklahoma and Kay Electric during an upcoming trip to Guatemala.

Spencer will join an effort to bring electrical service to the villages of Montenegro and El Estucal. According to organizers, the project is expected to provide new electrical service to approximately 80 homes, an elementary school and a health care provider.

Spencer told organizers Kay Electric will cover his expenses for the trip and that he did not need additional financial assistance. Boonies organizers said they nevertheless wanted the community to have an opportunity to recognize his work and send him to Guatemala with its support.

Funds raised for Spencer may be used to assist his family while he is away or potentially to provide gifts for children in the villages he will be serving.

"Your presence is much appreciated to show our pride in Kris," organizers said.

Admission to the Sept. 12 event is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger. Cash, Venmo and Cash App payments will be accepted at the north entrance off Judo Road.

Vehicle parking will be available immediately to the right after entering the north gate. Motorcycles and side-by-sides will be permitted throughout the property at slow speeds.

Boonies is a bring-your-own-beverage venue, with organizers emphasizing that a family-friendly atmosphere will be maintained throughout the event. Guests may also dry camp overnight in an RV or tent.

Organizers are working to add a dunk tank to the day's activities, although that attraction had not been confirmed as of the announcement.
